25th Cartier Polo World Cup on Snow
The world's polo elite will be meeting up from 29 January to 1 February 2009 for the Cartier Polo World Cup on Snow.

Preparations for the jubilee are already going full speed ahead, while the winter polo tournament on the frozen Lake of St. Moritz can look back on impressive and successful history. Year after year, the importance of the event as a sports and social event has continued to grow. The teams' handicaps – and indication of the player's expertise – have constantly improved and today stand at 20 to 22 goals for each team, which is genuinely world class.

As glamorous as it may be today, the event had modest beginnings. Now celebrating its 25th successful year, it all started when a handful of keen polo fans from St. Moritz decided to impress the world with a brand-new type of sport: polo played on snow. The idea was conceived in summer 1983 when they got together for a few drinks while attending the tournament in Munich. The St. Moritz Polo team, founded in 1978, had travelled there to take part in a competition. The members of the small group were tossing all kinds of ideas into the air, and one of them seemed particularly attractive: to organize a winter polo tournament in St. Moritz.

Four high-goal teams will be lining up once again for the start of the 25th Cartier Polo World Cup on Snow. The Cartier, Maybach, Brioni and Julius Baer teams have all signed up world-class players with the promise of polo at the highest level. Adriano Agosti (Cartier), Philipp Maeder (Maybach) and Guy Schwarzenbach (Brioni) will be acting as patrons, while George Milford Haven makes his St. Moritz debut with the hope of leading the Julius Baer team to victory.
